06 Feb 2022The route leaves Keighley through two very pleasant urban parks, Cliffe Castle having particularly good facilities. There is then a walled footpath, which can be a bit muddy in places, which comes out next to school playing fields, and the route then passes through Utley. Some of the roads in this first section are quite steep. At Utley there is a pub, and a chippy which is not usually open until teatime.
A single-track road leads from this pleasant village over the railway, dual carriageway, and River Aire onto the golf course. (There are signs that the river may flood the bridge here when it is particularly wet weather.) There is a restaurant here, open to the general public, but from an internet search, it looks a bit posh, and dogs are not allowed in. The path across the golf course is short and easy, and arrives at some woods where the right-hand fork will take you onto the canal towpath, next to a swing bridge.
The towpath is well surfaced with compacted gravel all the way into Silsden. There is a bench at Lodge Hill Bridge. All along the canal there are nice views across Airedale, and the first section is wooded on the opposite side. It was a very enjoyable section of towpath walking.
Coming into Silsden the canal passes modern canalside housing, and a mill which manufactures and sells (on site) various types of outdoor gear – Snugpak – which I’m going to investigate more!! This route goes underneath the road which leads into the town centre, and then along a very short street for access to that road. This avoids stairs, but it would also be possible to ascend a flight of stairs to the road before going under the bridge; or a short distance earlier you could descend a flight of stairs and go underneath the canal on a back road into the centre, via the route taken by SilKei One.

09 Sep 2022Accurate and well used route. There is a cafe in Cliffe Castle Park and toilets when it's open.
Several cafes and pubs in Silsden.

09 Sep 2022Hi Siân, please could you add a review of you own, rather than a comment on my review, because that will help towards verification with three positive reviews. It can be exactly the same text if you want. Thanks
