Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Ken

27 Aug 2022 Summer

An urgent request goes out to complete a Slow Way, this needs immediate action, call for Wonder Walker. A six thirty start, three buses and Kinetic Ken is in Lichfield before 9am to look at Shelic.

Three routes with reviews but which one to go for? It's only four miles so I devise a route that covers all the options.

Shelic-2 was perhaps an interim route while Claypit Lane was closed.

Having arrived along Shenlic-1 I set off from Shenstone, missed the footpath which I had emerged from only ten minutes before, so noted there is no finger post. As this is Staffordshire I'll report that via the Peak and Northern Footpaths Society website.

Good escape through a green park of some sort then over the clear running stream with a piece of art in the water. Those worn stone steps up to the railway bridge must have been there a while. It looks like most path users continue along the track but the Slow Way heads north so keep a close eye on the plot. Then a field of carrots and no sign of the path.

Farmers are quick to complain about inconsiderate dog owners allowing their pets to stray from the path or moan about illegal fly tipping in their gateways. But is the pot calling the kettle black. Footpath are public highways the only difference between them and roads is the limitation for users to be on foot not in a vehicle. The Highway Act 1980 is clear, section 134 subsection (3) requires the occupier to make good the surface of the path and indicate the line of the path on the ground. Section 137A (1) (b) requires the occupier to prevent the crop from encroaching on any relevant highway. The penalty for non compliance is a fine not exceeding level 3 (£1,000).

Watling Street was no busier than Claypit Lane and its wide so I had no issue with occasional passing traffic, I met dog walkers coming the other way. Turning into Birmingham Road I didn't enjoy the narrow overgrown pavement with traffic bombing up behind me. Thankfully only cars, no HGVs although the bus did buzz a bit close. The pavement is poorly maintained until the 40 mph signs after that it is much improved, paid for no doubt by the expanding housing development heading south. Traffic noise all the way to the meeting unlike the quiet escape of Shelic-1

A possible route but for me the least enjoyable due to poor maintenance of the pavement and the inconsiderate farmer.

Pretty much pavement pounding from Birmingham Road until Watling Street. Although roadworks and construction is currently ongoing, thus slowing the speed of traffic.

Once on Watling street it is quieter although there is no pavement and you are sharing the road with vehicular traffic.

After crossing underneath the M6 Toll, you move into fields which aren't especially well marked, but likely changes depending on the seasonality of crops. You cross a bridge over the Cross-City line before heading towards Shenstone Lammas land.

Once in Shenstone, you have the option of going into the village proper, or taking a diversion underneath the railway bridge and walking along a well maintained footpath in a wooded area next to Footherley Brook.

I fully understand the reason to change to this route because of the closure of Claypit Lane but I would not recommend this route for two reasons (1) The long stretch along the very busy Birmingham Road and (2) the somewhat dangerous section along Watling Street. So would suggest Shelic One is a better route.

Having not managed to follow Shelic One due to the closure of Claypit Lane I had to come up with this route on the fly. The first section follows Birmingham Road out of Lichfield as far as Watling Street. The route out of Lichfield is far more direct than the route chosen by Shelic One, which is frankly puzzling as Birmingham Road has a good pavement even after leaving Lichfield's city limits. Watling Street is an open, walkable lane but does require some caution as it is a national speed limit road. However as it is parallel with the A5 and M6Toll, both of which are only hundreds of metres away from it, it is not used much. The end joins Clay Lane which is similarly quiet and passes through the village of Wall which has English Heritage owned Roman remains (Letocetum) and a pub "The Trooper" which does food. The road then passes under the A5 and M6Toll. The route takes you over gently rolling countryside and crosses a brideg over the the railway. You then walk through a small park on the edge of Shenstone before joining the quiet pavemented streets as far as the station.
