01 Mar 2023 (edited 03 Mar 2023)Walked from Shepshed to Kegworth. A good, direct and surprisingly pleasant route.
Leaving the meeting point at the Bull Ring in Shepshed, we go a short distance up Field Street then turn right up an alleyway that leads past a large Co-Op to Hallcroft. We go straight on through the Market Place then left up Chapel Street and right along the edge of the village along Oakley Road, past a park and straight on where the road becomes a farm track. We follow the track left over Grace Dieu Brook and a short distance up the hill, then take the field path right along the edge of Piper Wood which leads to the bridge over the M1. Beyond the bridge the path is narrow and enclosed between fences, but becomes a good track lower down as it passes the farm to reach Ashby Road.
We cross the road and go straight on. Note that the path along the hedge stays on the right (east) side throughout (the OS map suggests it used to cross twice). The path continues along a new hedge to reach a wide pasture overlooking Long Whatton, which we cross diagonally to reach the little path past the school. The bottom of this path where it meets the Green has a couple of steps. We go left along the Green past the church, then sharp left down Mill Lane then across the field path past Gallows Wood and Five Acre, across a couple of arable fields (on a well marked line) past Slade Farm. We continue down to a very narrow bridge and head straight on along the field edges to Kegworth Road, which is easiest to reach along the ramped and indirect cycle track rather than straight down the bank which is planted with new trees.
Beyond the road we go straight on across another field to New Brickyard Lane, then straight on along London Road, east on Whatton Road (a short section lacks a pavement) then up an alleyway that leads to the meeting point in the Market Place.

16 Sep 2022I walked Kegworth to Shepshed along a well plotted route. A walk of three parts, to Long Whatton excellent walk no stiles. Onward to M1 bridge path is enclosed plus stiles. M1 to Shepshed again excellent walking. Nothing special about the landscape. Seats and a porch at Long Whatton church about half way, also two inns just off route.
Pavements on the short sections of busy roads, safe central reservation at by-pass crossing, otherwise very quiet lanes. Minor issues of alignment for plot but paths are well used and marked. South of Slade Farm boundary crossing not on definitive line, redundant stile, now a gap. Busy overhead with landing planes during my walk.
South of Long Whatton a mix of stiles and gates then narrow fenced and a bit overgrown south of Mitchell's Spring Farm, keep to the footpath at the mast, not the track. After the motorway crossing it's back to an excellent wide headland path alongside the wood, then a track becomes a road with pavement. A pleasant approach to Shepshed which has far more shops and services that I had expected.
