Description
A replacement for Sanstr one. A long walk, with no real stopping points along the way. Accessibility improved at St Neots end, and 2km of unnecessary road/verge walking removed - where footpath route is not too indirect and safer.
Despite it's length, this is a nice walk. Some gates, steps and narrow sections, uneven terrain, but mostly flat apart from Crane Hill which is steep especially if walked from Sandy to St Neots. Be aware that between Gipsy Corner and Abbotsley Hotel Golf Club, crops obscure the correct footpath and you may need to follow crop markings and correct yourself. Footpath into the same field can be overgrown but is passable

Strider
28 May 2023I walked from Sandy to St Neots on a hot sunny spring day.
What have the Romans ever done for us? Well, provided most of this route for us.
Quickly out of Sandy town there are well made grit farm tracks heading NE before joining the long straight NNE Roman road, set your compass, easy navigation. The road starts pretty much like a road, gritted or concreted underfoot and used by farm vehicles, but this gives way to more grassy paths with open vistas across huge fields with the occasional small wood. Fairly easy walking, quite flat, except for Crane Hill. There was a short section of road (Drewels Lane) without pavement or verge, but it was quiet. The path through tiny Gipsy corner copse was quite overgrown, The path across the field from Gipsy Corner to the golf course had been ploughed and had crops on it (perhaps visible in winter) but I walked around the field alongside a rivulet which had a path rather than walk through the crop. The golf course was lovely, full of hawthorn in full bloom, they seem particularly frothy this year. Another long path beside a huge field, across a road, over a low slung wire 'gate' into a field close to a moat which seemed to have over-spilled into the field. There are ground works with fences just past the bridge under the A428 but the path is not obstructed. Entering St Neots outskirts there is a little suburban walking then a very pleasant cycle/walking path through parkland before crossing a bridge into St Neots town center. The station is another 2km away.
A stile and some narrow paths would make this unsuitable for wheels
Quite a walk, glad I took plenty of water and some snacks, shops only at each end. Wide open skies, fresh air, good vistas, and apart from birdsong, very quiet. Well worth a walk.

02 Oct 2022A long stint, mainly due to long stretch along former roman road which is now a mixture of footpaths and road walking.
No amenities along the main stretch of the route, despite shop in suburbs in St Neots.
Bring good walking boots and plenty of refreshments.

22 Aug 2021This is a long Slow Way, with no real stopping points along the main section of the route. From St Neots to Sandy this route is not too strenuous in terms of terrain. There are sections where careful understanding of the map is required (e.g. Hen Brook) and field markings mean that the route may vary throughout the year (field at TL 2056).
This route also is narrow at 1 or 2 points (~40cm) and has several cycle/car barriers. See photographs on review.
Otherwise it is totally passable as part of the network.
