Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

10 Apr 2023Lovely easy to follow route. I started in Deal (castle is worth visiting) and walked along the coast before cutting across to Sandwich. The route to Sandwich is very easy to follow as there is a sign at the start and concrete markers across the golf course. Will definitely walk again.

17 Dec 2022Walked from Sandwich to Deal on a bright, crisp day in December. It is a lovely route, easy to follow on the ground. It starts alongside the River Stour, then crosses two white-painted foot bridges. It then heads along some raised paths across flat fields to enter the Royal St. Georges Golf Course. The footpath across the golf course is well-trodden and waymarked over the dunes to reach the sea. The path then follows a road or track across the top of the beach, or if the tide is out along the water's edge if you prefer.
At the edge of Deal, the path becomes a concrete promenade along the sea wall past attractive buildings as far as the pier, where the route nips into the town centre to finish.
There are no facilities along the way, but plenty at either end. The cafe at the end of the pier is recommended. There were some kissing gates to negotiate, but the route was pretty flat all the way. Some sand dune and pebbly sections. All in all a very good Slow Way.

14 Nov 2022Beautiful, straightforward walk along the coast, and both Deal and Sandwich have shops and restaurants that are great start/end points.

25 Oct 2021This is a very straightforward, enjoyable, and easy route, much of which is off-road. For almost its entire length, the route follows the Saxon Shore Way, which is well signposted and waymarked.
Access issues: There are stiles and kissing gates where the footpath crosses the Royal St George's Golf Club; and access to the promenade at Sandown, to the north of Deal is down a short flight of steps.

30 Apr 2021Rather than head straight for the coastline, it's nice to go across the flat drained fields for a bit first, and cut across a bit later.
