Description
We tried out this route in winter as an easier, potentially less muddy option. In retrospect, I would probably use the orange route rather than the purple (as shown in this screenshot) out of Alsager. We tested the purple route, but on the way back, we actually walked most of the purple route and it was good

31 Jan 2023A pleasant and peaceful walk from Alsager station - with the main section along the Trent and Mersey canal. Walking part of it on a subsequent date the first half mile on the towpath was hampered by fishermen, some of whom had their fishing tackle obstructing the canal towpath. The walk into Sandbach town centre from the canal was architecturally interesting - past a long row of large former almshouses. Sandbach has a choice of places to eat/drink, the Grade 1 listed Old Hall was good. On the whole an accessible route, ok for dogs but pushchairs may find the towpath bumpy.

18 Jan 2023The route from pretty (but lacking in facilities) Alsager Station started along fairly busy road with pavements, but got a lot quieter after leaving the A road, eventually becoming a track leading up to the towpath at Rode Heath, next to a pub. From here we walked just over 3 miles of the Trent and Mersey Canal. This was mostly rural and passed several locks which were often in side-by-side pairs.
There was an aqueduct over the B5078 and we also passed beneath the M6, but the noise from the motorway didn’t carry too far. There were open views back towards Mow Cop. At the golf course at Malkin’s Bank there was a café (see SandAls Four for photo).
The quiet road into Sandbach initially had no paving, but soon reached an attractive row of cottages where the paving started. On reaching the A533 into the town, there was a lovely, quite large, set of almshouses. There were also quite a few very nice old buildings in the town centre, including a couple of lovely pubs serving food.
Generally, this was a very pleasant route and was easy to navigate.
