Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

11 Jan 2024This is a challenging one to review fairly because when I did the walk there was a closure in Rye (which I- probably against best judgement- climbed over/under) that made the initial phase of the walk challenging. As far as I could tell there were alternative routes around the closure, but I'm not familiar enough with Rye to be able to use them effectively.
Another issue I had was that my GPX reader was either faulty or I was very unobservant. Somewhere in the middle the route deviates from the RMC path (though seemingly for little reason, perhaps so the route connects more villages). I attempted to follow this deviation but quickly found myself heading wildly off course, so I corrected this by just returning to the RMC. I arrived in Ham Street just fine where things were quite straightforward.

28 Nov 2021A safe walk, with decent paths, with some great views from the top of the old Isle of Oxney.
Keep an eye out for decent-tasting cherries on the trees lining the Military Canal between Lock Cottage and Appledore.
The only reason I've dropped a star is because in a dry summer the Saxon Shore Path from Appledore to Ham Street is superior than the Royal Military Canal, in my opinion. It regularly offers better views, with more varied scenery around the path (a church, vineyards, a nice bench with a view). In a wet season I would tend to vouch more for the Military Canal route seen here though.
Both take in the Woolpack Inn at Warehorne so that's a bonus as the pubs in Ham Street can't match up to that one, definitely for food anyway.
