26 Jun 2025I started from Rugby. The start of the walk involves a lot of pavement pounding and in hindsight might have been a nicer end as there are many food, drink and supply options as well as buses near the start and the very well served railway station which the route passes. After a passing under the railway, the route follows a few more main roads before joining the Great Central Walk, an old railway line which is popular with local walkers. This section accounts for about a quarter of the walk and had it all been like this I would have given it 5 stars! It ends at a picnic spot and having crossed a field (where I saw a baby deer) the route briefly joins a quiet road, to cross the M6 by bridge. The route on the other side was where it lost a mark and it wasn't due to desperately overgrown or fenced off sections, it just seems that very few people use these paths. Just enough for me to be able to tell where I should be walking. The section to the west of the old railway consists of a field crossing, a walk through a yard, a crossing of the A5 (which was comparatively easy but might need some care) and then a series of barely trodden paths that were happily marked, now I'd crossed into Leicestershire. The route from Shawell and Swinford went back up to 5 stars. There were a couple of overgrownish sections, but a bridge delivered me safely over the M1. Getting to Swinford meant crossing some well tended fields with my destinations in sight. Swinford itself has a pub, which was not opening until 5pm on the day I walked past and is the last real settlement before the walk along the lane to Stanford-on-Avon. The finishing point, which is just across the border in Northamponshire is a strange choice of node, consisting of a caravan park, a stately home, a church and the sites of two abandoned villages. There is no link to public transport, there are no shops and no one appears to live there. If the section between the M6 and Shawell could be seen to with a few strimmers, this would be worthy of top marks. Saying that, I reckon this is the best way to walk between these two nodes.
