Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

01 Jul 2023The closed footpath problem at Paddock Wood is no more. And the walk was very enjoyable. But.... the path from Snipe Wood into Pembury runs alongside a stream at some points, and it looks very much like the stream runs down it for a lot longer. A small ditch has been cut into the side for lots of it, and there are multiple places where people have put branches along the path as a kind of raft over the mud. And other places have ad hoc stepping stones made of bricks, broken paving slabs, bits of fibreboard even. Plus, when I came out into Pembury the path was pretty overgrown. Then there's quite a long walk along the main road through the village, and further along an alley. When it would be shorter to use the other main road. And there's a tempting woodland footpath which avoids that, but it starts further north. So I doubled back, found another way that seems likely to be drier, and was also more open and interesting, then checked the other path too. It was very good and I'll upload a new route incorporating them soon. I rejoined this route again near the village green, where the pub, hotel chippy and the only bits of this route I didn't actually test today are on Google Street View, and it is dated yesterday! So I'm confident they'll be fine.

23 Mar 2023Sorry, hit send too quickly. What I meant to elaborate was that at very least, it isn't currently accessible to the public. I found it blocked by construction work and though I had a good look around I couldn't find another way on. I don't doubt it existed at some point as multiple mapping software display it, but right now this route is not an option for pedestrians.

28 Mar 2023Hi Arin, was the footpath blockage quite soon after leaving Paddock Wood? Kent have an online footpath map. https://www.kent.gov.uk/environment-waste-and-planning/public-rights-of-way/rights-of-way-map. They're pretty good about updating closures etc too. Well, better than a lot of other authorities.

28 Mar 2023Hello Daisy, thanks for showing me this. Looks like I was right and there is a closure after Badsell Road, but it's only for a few hundred feet and there is an alternative way onto the footpath. If anyone reading this still wants to try the route, you can go onto Daisy's link and use this reference code, 0042/WT268/4, to check the status of the closure and the alternative path.

28 Mar 2023Hi. No worries, this route is on my to do list so I was interested in your review. That Kent map was helpful to me so I hoped it would be useful for others. :)

23 Jul 2023Hi Arin. I finally I tested PadRoy 1 and your closed path in P Wood is open again. I found a better way through Pembury too, with less time on roads. It's uploaded as PadRoy 2 if you're in the area.
