Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

14 Sep 2022I would not recommend this route without some alterations. Either end is fine, with a shop and transport links, the route is straight forward at both the Crofton and Royston ends. At the Crofton end there are several gates through fields of livestock (usually sheep), all easily accessed. The middle sections are questionable...
There is absolutely no need to detour away from Anglers reservoir into Wintersett Village, definitely use the lakeside path around Anglers. This way takes you past the cafe and toilets (and, as well as being shorter in distance, also avoids a dangerous walk along a narrow lane with no pavement). Walking on the east side of the reservoir is 0.25 miles longer but more picturesque, the west side is shorter but the view of the lake is hidden by trees.
Onto the middle section of the route.... if you follow the original route via Cold Hiendley you will need to tackle unmarked footpaths and fields with no clear access, its extremely difficult and not a pleasant walk. The path alongside Wintersett is overgrown in summer and extremely muddy in winter. The fields around cold hiendley are mostly unmarked and the farmer does not leave a path through them so when there are crops they become virtually impossible to cross. Instead, from Anglers I would walk through Haw Park Woods to pass the end of Cold Hiendley Reservoir on the west (as opposed to the east end) then use the path alongside Barnsley Canal to Navvy Lane. This way also cuts off most of the Navvy Lane road section. The Barnsley Canal/Haw Park Woods way is 0.25miles longer but is a far more enjoyable walk on decent paths.

24 Jul 2023Your suggestions look very sensible, so I have mapped your route (if I have interpreted it correctly) and submitted it as ROYCRO two.
