Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

29 Oct 2024From the meeting place at Rawmarsh we head south to meet the busy main road, best to cross here at the lights. Passing the parish church and war memorial we then fork right into Westfield Road which has a view of our destination in the distance. Along here are the remains of a pumping shaft built around 1823 to pump water from the Earl Fitzwilliam mines.
The route continues into School Lane alongside a large recycling centre before meeting a main road at the Fitzwilliam Arms Hotel, an expansion of the public house that originally stood on the south side of the road. A section of noisy roadside pavement walking follows at Parkgate. Old maps show Park Gate House with formal laid out gardens, all now lost under industrial buildings. They also show a direct route to Wentworth Woodhouse which some suggest is the origin of the name Parkgate. There is no ideal crossing point of this road, but a crossing must be made.
We continue on the pavement under a rail bridge then take a surfaced path left into Parkgate shopping centre. It’s a bit of a maze and for some a distraction but I had no desire for the services on offer. There are zebra crossing markings to cross the service roads and drivers were courteous to pedestrians. We are aiming for a gap between shops and the plot is clear about the location if not the route to arrive there.
Others are using this route but the throng are left behind. We take the old stepped bridge over the railway but do not cross the waterway. From here it’s a path with the water on our left to pass under a road bridge. If lucky you may see a huge tanker taking oil to the canal side base of Exol. I was fascinated by the slow progress passing moored craft, where does it turn I wonder? We are prevented from seeing close action or moored craft as the path fails to stay waterside, eventually meeting the end of Northfield Road.
Cross the canal and take Greasbrough Road which continues as a path to pelican lights another path links to further severed section of Greasbrough Road. The tram and train station is right while our plot continues left to the bus station.
