Description
From Romiley Station cross the road at the pedestrian lights, turn left, immediate right following the blue signs (Middlewood Way and Chadkirk Chapel) onto Beech Lane and Chadkirk Lane.
Soon after the lane goes under the Peak Forest canal take the steps left up to the canal towpath and turn right.
The path (stones and earth, can be muddy in places at times) goes past the Board Mill (photo 1) and rises over Hyde Bank tunnel (photos 2 and 3) to Oakwood Road (stony).
Keep right at fork, passing Hyde Bank Farm on your right. Look for the descent to the canal on the right before the big gates.
Continue to Marple Viaduct (photos 4 and 5).
At the far end take the towpath on the left hand side of the canal to ascend Marple Locks.
Left at the main road to descend Brabyns Brow and take the steps left into the station (gpx shows road entrance)

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

04 Feb 2022The road sections of this route immediately from Romiley station are alongside quiet roads, and should not present any risks for most people. When the pavement runs out, the road is generally only used by infrequent slow motor traffic.
This is definitely not a route for anyone with wheels (unless they can be carried). The steps up to the canal from Vale Road are narrow, but they do have a handrail. The canal towpath itself can become very muddy in wet weather and it often takes a while to dry out. That said, the canalside is very tranquil.
The necessary diversion from the canal to go over the tunnel at Hyde Bank Farm is easy to follow, but the descent back to the towpath is not accessible to any wheeled traffic other than cycles.

16 Jan 2022Left my 3-star review on Rommar 1, saying I actually came this way - this is the correct way to do this route, as Rommar 1 goes through the mill.
As for the route itself, it's quite short, direct, and almost all towpath except for one flight of steps in the middle. When I visited, there were families with small children, dogs, and even kayakers out enjoying it. Would recommend for almost anyone except pushchairs and wheelchairs due to the steps.
