Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

08 Apr 2022After downloading the gpx file and uploading it to OS Maps we followed the route in reverse as the gpx route went from Brentwood to Romford.
The first part of the walk is along straight residentials roads for approx 2 miles from Romford station, past Gidea Park and towards Hornchurch where the road meets a dual carriageway (A127) . Take care when crossing the road, there is crossing point to the left and an island of some sort on the central reservation.
There is a little bit more of walking along residential streets before you get to the green space on this route.
Walking through Harold Court park, a pretty park with children and teenager play areas, outdoor adult gym and green open space to let dogs off the lead. The path through here leads to pages wood. This is a really lovely green space and you may wish to spend some more time here exploring the pathways. There is a 5k running route marked out with orange way markers
At the time of writing the bridge between the park and pages wood is blocked off but there is a map of the detour which can be muddy and slippery if there has been rain.
When coming out of pages wood cross the road at the pedestrian crossing onto the verge. Take care when you turn left onto nags head lane there is no footpath and the road is busy. There appears to be footpaths on the map that take you into Tyler's common but these were overgrown and inaccessible when we walked the route so we had to walk along the road for a while.
Take care walking along Nags Head Lane. There is a lumpy verge that you can walk on for much of the way but some points you have to walk on the road.
Get onto the bridle way that runs parallel to the road by going into the car park for Tyler’s common. The bridle way was really muddy in some parts and would not be suitable for pushchairs, or scooters.
Take the gate on the left before the path bears round to the right to get back on to the road where the bridge crosses over the motorway (M25)
At the end of Nags Head Lane you turn right onto Brook Street which continues onto London road towards Brentwood passing some shops and pubs. The route takes you right at Westwood Avenue through a residential area via Brentwood station and then back towards the town center. If you don’t want to go to the station, you can just continue straight up the steep hill towards the town center and to the end of the route. This would cut the route short by about a mile.
After passing the station and walking up the hill on Queens Road, the route takes you left onto at Thomas road. You can go left through the churchyard just before this and stop and have a look at the pretty church before walking up towards the High Street where you’ll come out opposite M&S. Turn right on the High St and the end of the route is the Dairyman pub
The town center is a bustling high street with lots of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants.
It’s possible to cut this route just over a mile shorter by starting from Gidea park station. You may also wish to end at Brentwood station if you don’t wish to do the extra to the High Street.
A good route that has a mix of urban and green space. Paths and trails suitable for dogs, mountain bikes. Not really suitable for pushchairs.

12 Aug 2023Hi Carla. I might upload an alternative Slow Way route for Romford to Brentwood and as you know the area well I wondered if you could have a quick look. It's only a little longer, has less road walking and avoids the lumpy verge/muddy bridleway issue you had on Nags Head Road. https://www.plotaroute.com/routecollection/12937?units=km&maptype=paths

12 Aug 2023PS the Romford Recorder says the Harold Court Park / Pages Wood footbridge has reopened!

13 Dec 2023Alternative tested and uploaded. Still includes Harold Wood Park and Pages Wood but avoids the dodgy A127 crossing and everything to do with Nags Head Lane.
