Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

24 Mar 2024An enjoyable route on the whole but not particularly scenic. The route is easy to follow and with a variety of gradients. There are a number of difficult stiles to cross, either they are damaged or quite high (I'm only 5'2). Whilst the mud was bearable, I can envisage it be a difficult route after rainfall. There are several times when it is necessary to cross the A21, thankfully both are on straight sections making it quite safe to cross.
There is a section in Mountfield where it isn't necessary to take the footpath as the road is quiet.

03 Jul 2023Highlights: startled roe deer (sorry!) buzzards, orchids, wild chicory and other interesting plants, and clouds of butterflies, for which I have to give credit to the nettles. The broad shape of the walk, the landscape, the views, the pretty villages, etc was great. On the other hand, there were a couple of places that were really difficult to get through the brambles, or the nettles, or when brambles were hiding the nettles. And the plotting is very poor, which sometimes is actually misleading. It makes the route appear a good bit shorter than it really is and just complicates your journey without much purpose. There are ways to get out of Battle quickly along footpaths but this one follows the busiest road for a long time. I stopped to ask someone about a particular routing blip and got some really helpful advice about the state of various paths from Terry and Brenda who just happen to be in the local Ramblers group. What a stroke of luck! I'd like to test a new route using that advice, probably running to the east whereas this leans slightly west.
Will flesh this review out with specific warning for the plotting problems, but long sleeves and trousers required, maybe heavy duty footwear outside of summer.
