Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

05 Jul 2024I agree with all previous reviewers. An excellent and easy walk. Mostly along the canal towpath. There is road walking at either end but this is all paved. some paths across open fields between Ridgeway and the M4 underpass but easy to follow. A very fitting slowways route, very direct.

16 Sep 2022Nice gentle walk. Starts off with a hill climb from the station; which is soon over. Head onto the canal path and just enjoy the view of the canal, or the hills to your right.
Eventually you will come to fourteen locks. There is a nice cafe and shop here if you need to refuel. Plenty of seating around the filling pond and a nice viewpoint.
Head towards Newport. Slight decline down past the locks. Head into the tunnel under the M4; darkest part but brief; then keep on the path until you hit the bridge.
Head up through the fields following the well maintained path and you eventually come to a built up area of Al-tyr-ryn. Enjoy the views from this vantage point.
The rest of the rout was quite quiet and easy to follow through the streets. An enjoyable walk with lots to look at.

28 Apr 2022From the station, it`s a steep uphill walk, mainly up Manor Way, up to the Mon & Brec canal, but from there it`s easy going along the towpath for a few miles. The scenery is excellent along the canal and you wouldn`t think you were just a couple of hundred metres up in parts from the towns and villages spread along the bottom of the valley.
The canal passes the Fourteen Locks centre at Rogerstone, a pleasant amenity centre with a cafe open during the daytime. There is also a shop and information centre showing the history of the canal and its importance to the industrial revolution locally. Well worth taking some time out to investigate and put your feet up for a while.
From there, it`s quite a steep track down to the bottom of the locks where the path goes under the M4 motorway. After a while, the path turns off to the right to climb a steep hill through fields into the Ridgeway part of Newport and from there it`s a steady walk downhill, but steep at times, into the city centre via suburban streets.

30 Apr 2021By canal side footpath and suburban roads ; steepish descent to Newport Railway Station .
Fourteen Locks Canal Centre is a good place to stop for refreshments. It is of historic transport interest.
