18 Jan 2025I walked this from Rishton to Church. It's a short walk from the library along the main road to the canal bridge. The barrier and slope here is the only restriction on the route I could see for wheelers. If you can negotiate the cycle barrier and slope here, the rest of the route is achievable I'd say.
I always like walks that involve canal towpaths. The Canal View Cafe is immediately on your left under the bridge. I've never been past when it's open but it gets good reviews. The surface of the towpath is very good, the views to the east are expansive and the trains are frequent to the west. The drone of the motorway is ever present as you walk the canal. I'm tall enough to see over the aqueduct parapet to the M65 - it's not that exciting Mary!
The walk has been described well by others so I'll not repeat it and haven't included any photos. The Church end of the route is a bit run down, starting with the smallholding by the canal. A derelict church and closed pub add to the character of the walk into Church, as does the litter.
The walk ends around the Hyndburn Leisure Centre but there's not much of a village centre.

26 Mar 2024Walked from Church to Rishton.
Starting in the residential surroundings of Church, the first portion of this route passes though a housing estate, before crossing the Leeds & Liverpool Canal, and onto a well-established and well surfaced shared off-road (pedestrian and cycle) path. Joining the canal, just south of Dunkenhalgh Aqueduct (an aqueduct which passes above the M65), the route remains scenic, but is unfortunately tarred by the drone of motorway traffic. From here it's a lovely walk along the tarmacked, and by canal standards, excellently drained towpath to the main road, and subsequently Rishton Town Centre.
This SlowWay is well served by public transport, with both Church and Rishton stations a short walk from the start and end points.
Wheels are well catered for, however there are unfortunately two width restricted barriers (see images) which are likely to cause access issues for some users.

31 Jan 2022The route leaves Church along housing streets, and then passes a rather sad looking derelict church, before crossing the Leeds and Liverpool Canal on a tarmacked farm access road. This crosses a valley to meet the canal again (the canal having followed a longer route along contours). At the time I walked it, part of the canal was closed off here for significant repairs, but luckily my route was not blocked.
I had been looking forward to flying over the M65 on the aqueduct here, but unfortunately the walls either side were too high for me to see over! At least I could see the motorway a short distance beyond, as it climbed uphill. A lot of this route suffered from the constant drone of the traffic though.
There were good views towards Pendle Hill and the other hills and moors in the area. It was just a short walk from the canal (via a short steep slope and a cycle barrier) to the end of the route in Rishton. A short and pleasant route.
