Description
Walk from Richmond to Putney (or vice versa), on an alternative to the extremely pleasant, but hilly and unlit, 'Richmond Park' route (Ricput 2), with a number of benefits to offset the loss of the big green space. It's a much flatter route, because it avoids the steep hill at Roehampton, it avoids stairs, and is by-and-large accessible for wheelchair users, with one possible exception where the gap in a barrier is narrow (see photo). Also, it is well lit after dark, although a very short stretch (c 100m) on Barnes Common relies on light from the adjacent road rather than having its own lighting. The route passes directly by Barnes and Mortlake stations. Mostly quiet residential back streets and alleyways, a long stretch along Barnes Common past Barnes Station (well lit footpaths). Several wayside refreshment opportunities, notably at Vine Road recreation ground near Barnes Station, coffee van at Barnes Station, and at the shops and cafes on Sheen Lane, next to Mortlake Station. Richmond and Putney have plentiful cafes and pubs at start/end of route
