Description

This route is as Ricput 1, with all the lovely greenery via Richmond Park and East Sheen Common, but it's even better! I've made a small adjustment to keep to the public right of way at Roehampton Hospital (so no danger of locked after hours gates), and taken a greener route through the Roehampton estate, which passes the bus stop and shop. Otherwise the same as Ricput 1

An interesting route. Several almshouses on the way out of Richmond. I nearly missed a left fork halfway through the woods of East Sheen Common but in fact it comes out near the cricket ground eventually. Richmond Park was lovely as always (toilets at Sheen Gate). I'd not seen Adam's Pond before. At the Roehampton Estate, I took a path just after the junction of Danebury Avenue and Highcliffe Drive around the tower blocks to Clarence Lane. Steepish but shorter than the mapped route. After the hospital path, I took a footpath through to Westleigh Avenue as I was aiming for Putney Heath to continue to Wimbledon.

I walked from Putney to Richmond on a hot summer day.
From Putney there is some suburban walking along fairly good wide pavements to the Highcliffe Neighbourhood with a steep path down through the grounds. There is a café and toilets (wheelchair friendly) just inside Richmond Park, the park is closed to traffic at night as is the café and toilets but walkers can still walk through. The deer were hidden in the shade under trees. The park is beautiful. A short section of affluent residential walking then East Sheen Common with shaded paths winding through trees. The last part is along a busy road, but a pleasant parallel passage takes you away from the traffic for some of it. The approach to Richmond Station is always crowded and busy.
Some short steep parts but otherwise good for wheels.

I walked this from Putney to Richmond on a lovely warm Saturday afternoon. It had rained earlier in the day. It is better than both RicPut 1 and RicPut 2.

From Putney's busy High Street (photo #1) it soon follows quiet residential streets (photo #2). After passing a church (photo #3), there is an unpaved section (photo #4) which is more pleasant than walking along a road. After a few more residential streets (photo #5), you get a great view of the Wembley Arch (photo #6). Near Roehampton there is a fairly steep decline down (photo #8), before most of the rest of the route is through parks. First a section of Richmond Park (with toilet) (photo #9, #10, #11), and then a section to the slightly muddy East Sheen Common (photo #12, #13), before trying to by-pass the really busy Sheen Road (why is everybody driving .... slowly‽ (photo #14, #15)). It ends up finishing along some Richmond back streets ending up at Richmond station.

This is a route I made and yes, I've given it 5 stars. I gave 4 stars to Ricput 1 based on the potential locked gate/no public right of way at Queen Mary's Hospital, Roehampton. Ricput 2 sorts out that niggle, and also improves the route through the Roehampton estate with more green and less steep road (and a bus stop and shop). I am definitely walking this route on a regular basis from now on.
Route passes through central Richmond, lively pavement scene. Heading east from Richmond there is no escaping some busy road, it's the way the streets and railway work, but the route finds back alleys where they exist. Before long it heads across East Sheen Common, and eventually into Richmond Park (toilets, refreshments near to Roehampton Gate). Then up hill through the (now listed) world famous post-war modernist Roehampton estate, dropping down to Putney along leafy residential streets.
Excellent walking route. Fine for pushchairs, may not be wheelchair friendly because the hill at Roehampton (either direction) is pretty steep. Some narrow pavements, but route is stair free, almost curb free, park gates are wide. Possible mud on East Sheen common, but so far I've only walked this route when it's been dry underfoot.
