Description
The route follows the riverside at Kingston and Richmond, and passes through leafy Ham. It's much more direct than following the river all the way. Refreshment opportunities at Petersham, and along the river at both ends.
Route is based on Rickin Two with improvements - the A305 at Petersham now has a safe crossing point, the route line is more accurately drawn, and there's a slightly different quieter approach to Richmond station.
The riverside footpath at Richmond can flood at high tide, the detour is via the A307 Petersham Road between Richmond town centre and Petersham meadows. There are plenty of escape hatches from the riverside up to the A307 if you suddenly find you are paddling

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

16 Jul 2023Good route overall, however diversion round the back of St Peter's church is narrow and not well lit, and can be muddy after rain.

23 May 2023A wildly joyful route between Richmond and Kingston. I walked with Saira on a gorgeous early summer day. The riverside in Richmond is so lovely, and the route does a great job plotting a course through quiet and pleasant green spaces before rejoining the river on final approach to Kingston. Grateful to Jane for the perfect plotting of a lovely route, and to Saira for the company! Full marks for a great route I'd happily walk again. Safe, direct, green, pleasant, generally flat and smooth surfaces, and largely traffic-free! Can't beat that!.

22 May 2023I walked this route on a warm, sunny day with my friend and fellow slow way-er Mike T! It's a brilliant route (direct, safe, off-road and enjoyable) that takes in green spaces and quiet back roads, before joining the river again. Highlights included passing through Petersham meadows, seeing a woman dressed in the most fabulous technicolour outfit walk her horses and the best gelato ever at Canbury Secret Cafe found along the route near Kingston. 5 stars for the route! 5 stars for my day with Mike - best company! Totally joyous!!.

31 Jul 2021I made this route in response to Rickin Two, which is a very fine route but has some serious flaws which I wanted to correct. I think it's now a 5 star route.
I've walked it in both directions and it works really well both ways. At Richmond and Kingston the route runs by the river, at Ham it cuts across the wide loop of the river with a mix of quiet residential streets and green common land, making a reasonably direct and interesting route with very little main road. You may even get to pass by the herd of cows grazing at Petersham meadows, not bad for an urban walk.
There are toilets just inside Petersham Gate at Richmond Park: the route passes close to, though not directly by, the gates. Refreshments at Petersham and along the river at Richmond and Kingston.
A short detour would allow a stop off at Ham House for lovers of historic houses (National Trust). The house can be seen in the distance along the avenues between Petersham and Ham.
