Description

An exceptionally enjoyable route along the river, canal, and through parks, and really shows off London's green side.

This route is a new version of Riceal One which delivers improvements to weaknesses pointed out in reviews. Although Riceal One has earned its snail, this is an improved version, and is intended to be a replacement.
- It corrects routing inaccuracy at Boston Manor
- makes clear where the safe road crossing is at Pitzhanger.
- includes the new riverside path at Isleworth, so less road walking!
- a small detour at Richmond Lock to allow for high tides, if it isn't high water then by all means walk straight through on the riverside path.

Accessibility - There are steps to the bridge over the canal at Boston Manor, and to the bridge over the Thames at Richmond Lock.
This isn't a 24 hour route as Lammas Park closes at night

I walked this on a warm and sunny Saturday afternoon from Richmond to Ealing.

It's a lovely walk, going straight from the station at Richmond towards the Thames which it crosses (photo #1). Then it follows along Isleworth Alt (photo #2, #3, #4, #5, #6) before heading through Sion Park (photo #7). Once crossing the A315, the walk then follows the Grand Union Canal (photo #8, #9), and passes through a series of parks (photo #10, #12) (and Northfields station, photo #11) before finishing through busy Ealing to and up at Ealing Broadway station with good connections.

13/12/2022 - There is a temporary blockage to this route and Riceal1 as a footbridge is closed for repair. Hopefully it will be open again soon. In the meanwhile I have posted a photo of a walk-around (red line on map).

I walked from Richmond to Ealing on a rainy New Year's Eve.
A wonderfully varied walk that could take you all day if you were to wander through the parks and stop to see the exhibitions. Plenty of pubs and cafes too (water fountain by Northfields tube). Quaint villagey courtyards to wide open parks, busy streets to quiet waterways. This route really maximises the green spaces between the two areas. It was nice to pass the meridian line on New Years Eve.
Some steps make it unsuitable for wheelchairs and bikes are barred from some of the riverside paths.

Excellent route - well marked and easy to follow, as well as being a very enjoyable walk. Slightly longer than the alternative Richmond Ealing route, but a much nicer walk with very little road walking.

I walked Riceal One and found several issues, so I've made this new version Riceal Two, and I consider it is now fully deserving of 5 stars, and hopefully in time it too will earn its snail!
The route picks out some green highlights of South West London, including the river Thames, the Grand Union canal, and a stack of parks including Syon, Boston Manor, Lammas and Walpole. Not all the parks are open at night, and I would consider this a daytime only route.
There are good refreshment options, including Syon House and Northfields.
Excellent connectivity with the tube at Northfields and plentiful bus routes along the way.
There are two bridges with steps.
