Description
This route uses disused railway lines and mineral tramways wherever possible and follows much of the industrial archaeological structures of the region. Two cafes near the midway point. The on-road sections follow minor roads but there are two busy crossings to negotiate. Some sections can be muddy or with deep puddles in winter.
Unsuitable for bikes and wheelchairs as there are at least 4 stiles (near the Redruth end). The route takes you close to Gwennap Pit

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

02 Oct 2022We walked this route from Redruth to Truro with a dog. Overall it was perfectly functional, and also very enjoyable in parts, moreover in the first two thirds, nearer Redruth. There are some sections of paved road, which became more common nearer Truro, but these were all quiet enough.
Highlights include the old trail tracks and coming down through Poldice and the old mining land there. The route starts off high up with some really lovely views over the valleys. Later on the roads are generally a bit more enclosed by trees, so views are reduced, but the section coming across Carrine Common with Truro on the horizon was beautiful.
We managed to find the Bon Appetit cafe no problem, and we each ordered the largest slice of cake we had ever seen! Great midway point to stop and refuel.
Our dog loved the walk but had to spend long sections on the lead due to roads.
Overall, a nice day out, but a few too many kms on paved roads for a higher score.

02 Oct 2022A very functional yet enjoyable Slow Way. Redruth and Truro both have plenty of ammenities and onward travel options so are good start and end points. Carharrack and Twelveheads serve as good places to stop on the route if required.
Given the relatively wet weather we have had recently in Cornwall, the majority of the route was fine to navigate apart from one bridleway. The part between Goodern Manor Farm and the road to the south-west had large puddles (see photo) which looked quite deep and full of silage. I can imagine in the depths of winter this would be a tricky track to pass without wellies. It's hard to see a sensible alternative route that doesn't up the distance significantly though.
Carrine common itself was a pleasant surprise, a small pocket of heathland nestled amongst other landcover types. After that the road walking was fine, but not the best. There are quite a few blind corners, and from experience of cycling in this area, the roads through Penwethers can be used as a rat run to get into the western end of Truro. There are no pavements, and some drivers to fly around the corners!
To finish, the Newham trail is brilliant! Newly re-surfaced this year, it is a flat/wide multi-use trail with no motor traffic that can take you all the way into the Eastern end of Truro. It's a fantastic part of the active travel network in the area.

09 Sep 2022 (edited 12 Sep 2022)This was walked in reverse from Truro. Redtru2 has wide easy paths near Truro round the river fowey and on the Newham Trail. The mining Heritage trails near Twelveheads are much more challenging and do collect water quickly in the rain.
Be careful crossing Carn common the path is not obvious and the scrubland is rough if you go off track.
I managed to miss the two cafes mentioned altogether which made it a long route (I believe they are to the south nearer to Bissoe) so do be provisioned for the journey. I had an amazing time on this slowway and it definitely works well now so thank you to whoever de-bugged it.

15 Aug 2022Really varied and lovely walk. There are some tough hills but lovely views as a reward. There's a small diversion to gwenap pit which is worth it if that's your thing.
