Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

06 Jan 2024This was a lovely coastal walk with a friend on a rather overcast and at times showery day but very enjoyable nevertheless. A welcome walk after the days indoors over Christmas!
The Beacon is an easy point of reference near the start, followed by a very easy to follow route right to Marske. The first part of the walk takes you along the promenade, past fishing boats and intersting sculptures and plaques to celebrate Redcar’s history. A little further on at the roundabout the wide promenade is perfect for a good stretch of the legs. Also at the roundabout there is an option to follow a good footpath next to the road which leads directly to Marske. This could be a good alternative for wheelchair users or strollers or anyone wanting to take this direct route.
The pathway leaves the promenade a short way after the paddling pool and is way marked and follows the top of the grassy dunes. The pathway was a little muddy in places but easy enough to walk after all the recent rain. The views over to the cliffs at Huntcliffe are superb.
On the approach to Marske the route joins the footpath next to the road for the walk into the town. The walk finishes in the main part of the town near the roundabout. There are plenty of places to stop for coffee or to eat and many interesting independent shops to view.
The walk is about 3 miles.

05 Jan 2024A lovely coastal walk from Redcar to Marske, done on a damp dull day, but with my walking pal in tow, it helped to burn off some Christmas excess and catch up with our news!
We parked in the main car park on Majuba Road, much deserted today, facing the beach - and it was free! There's some pay and display though, so be careful.
Setting off along the colourful sea front at Redcar and then on to the hard surfaced esplanade which runs all the way almost until we reached Marske itself. On a good day the views are stunning here, looking back to Redcar and the huge wind turbine farm in the sea, and looking forward to the cliffs at Huntcliffe that rise from Saltburn just ahead.
If you're in a wheelchair, pushing a buggy, or just don't want a muddy walk the rest of this walk can be done easily and safely by walking along the pavement alongside the Coast Road, or you can walk over the grassy dunes as we did on clear paths until Marske is reached. Even the recent storms hadn't made these impassable.
The walk ends at the main roundabout on the High Street where there are plenty of places for food and refreshments, and some lovely individual shops too.
Using Strava we made this just short of 3 miles. Easy walking, the route is uncomplicated, with great views, and glorious fresh sea air.
