Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

13 Aug 2023I agree that walkers should use Reatwy Two which is an improved version of this this route. Reatwy two avoids the locked gate within Reading Abbey Ruins (flagged in a previous review), and also removes an unnecessary diversion away from the River Thames at Sonning.

20 Jun 2022Ah this is a gorgeous riverside route, but the route line at Reading Abbey/Oscar Wilde memorial walk delivered me to locked double gates; the open pedestrian gates are nearby, but I was in a picky mood and decided that I would correct the route and resubmit as Reatwy Two, rather than sign off a route with a built in backtrack, and the strong possibility that anyone approaching from the Twyford side may miss the Abbey ruins altogether.
So please use Reatwy Two, it has a couple of tiny tweaks, as well as the Abbey access correction, which I think improve the walk overall.

21 Jul 2021 (edited 23 Jun 2022)Reading to Twyford (Reatwy 1) review.
This walk consists of a stretch of the Thames Path with road walking at either end.
The walk begins at Reading Station. The route passes by places of local interest: Forbury Gardens, Reading Abbey ruins (the misplaced Henry I is under it somewhere!) and Reading Gaol (with its Bansky artwork added in March 2021).
The route leaves Reading along Kennet side and the Thames Path (Photo 1) to Sonning. Sonning has a choice of amenities, including a tea garden at Sonning Lock and The Bull Inn.
The route continues along a narrow grassy path by the Thames (Photo 2). Note the official Thames Path is on the opposite bank. The path ends with a sharp turn and the route continues along a tarmacked lane into Charvil.
The route leaves Charvil along Bath Road: an A-road with a pavement. Part of Bath Road is bypassed via Chilten Drive and a footpath by Lodden Nature Reserve. I found the footpath that day to be very muddy.
The route ends with a road walk into Twyford.
