One of my favorite walks, this route follows well trod paths along the river Irwell. The town center section gets off-road fairly quickly following the National Cycle Route 6. The path goes through the Burrs Country park with has food & drink available, and then follows the Irwell to Summerseat and then on into Ramsbottom. The track from 794151 to 794146 can get waterlogged in winter.

This is a good route. I followed the route on View Ranger and only once or twice went off route but easily spotted it and got back on track. Due to the width of some paths with gates to go through it isn't really suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. It goes into 2 open fields which had a few sheep in. It takes you around the edge of Nuttall park, Summerseat village and the East Lancs railway station, Brooksbottom cricket club was serving drinks and then down into Burrs country park with the Lamppost dog friendly cafe or the Brown Cow pub. The final stretch into Bury passed an industrial estate and through underpasses to take you into the centre and the end point at Kay gardens. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

A nice route. Mainly traffic free, except into / out of the towns at either end of the route. Not suitable for wheels, unless significant dismounting to go up stairs, through or over kissing gates carrying your bike. If doing 'out and back' then there is much more free parking at the Ramsbottom end of the route, where there are also many and varied places for refreshment. Plenty of industrial heritage along the route, including a section of the route on cobbles. Well placed benches to take a short break or a fill up on a snack. The East Lancashire Railway has stations at Both Bury and Ramsbottom - check the timetables at www.eastlancsrailway.org.uk. If you're in luck the steam trains will be running. The slow way crosses the rail track just outside Summerseat, where care needs to be taken if the trains are running. Otherwise the route is reasonably safe and direct, loosely following the River Irwell, very pleasant in some parts.
