Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Walked in reverse, this is a good rural route with the odd unpaved road. Terrain and footpaths through fields mean it's foot-only.

Starting in Billinge, with its bus stops, shops, bakeries, pubs and cafés, we head along the main road before ascending a cobbled slope to the residential road above. A series of tarmacced footpaths connect the roads, until we come to a road crossing. On the other side, up a slope onto a grass footpath, and, once past the farm, an unpaved tarmac drive heading uphill.

Where the road heads towards Billinge Hill, we head downhill along the edge of a field. Onto an unpaved, though dead-end, road, at the end we take a path around the last farm, before heading across a field to the trees in the centre; it can be hard to spot at first, especially before harvest, but it seems to be well-used once on it. Once around the trees, an overgrown footpath runs towards Rainford Brook Farm. The route map, and OS, suggest the footpath goes through the farm, but on the ground it was been rerouted around, between fences and hedges, and ahead of the tree-lined farm track to the road.

The road to and through Kings Moss is mostly unpaved (there's patches of pavement, but it's easier to stay on the road). Passing King's Moss Farm, we join a footpath by a debris screen, heading through some woods before opening up into fields. Through fields of various crops (oats, wheat, carrots, parsnips), through a gate by a farm, and a long rough farm track to the road.

We're not on this unpaved road for long, as we join another footpath at the curve. This too becomes a farm track leading into Rainford, where, after a couple of turns on paved roads, we come to the end with its shops, pubs and bus stops.

A good rural walk on good paths; great views from Billinge Hill too.
