08 Nov 2024I walked from Potters Bar to Radlett on a grey Autumn day.
Away from the shops and the busy High Street then through quiet suburban roads with wide pedestrian paths, There's a small woodland path before passing a school. Bridgefoot Lane starts paved and becomes narrower and more like a path as you walk along it. This takes you to a field, on previous occasions the path was clear, but not today it had just been drilled. Paths across fields do change slightly every year as the farmer makes a new path. Through the hedge and along the path. Here there is a short 21m part where there is no path, care needed. Crossing at the roundabout is easy, then across the A1(M). A road with a pavement takes you through the outskirts of South Mimms and across the M25. There is an embankment with a staircase here. Then a series of field, kissing gate, field, kissing gate, field etc. There are horses but they ignored me so completely I wondered if I still existed. St Giles' & St Margaret's church in Ridge has a water tap near the front entrance. More field, gate, field, gate field walking, not all gates are in the best of condition. Another recently drilled field with hidden path to cross (the drills were still there) and into Pursley Farm yard with a strange hole-in-a-gate exit. Pavement walking into Shenley where there is a bench and Post Office/shop. A quiet road past more farms turns into a path which enters woodland. Exiting the woods a steep road takes you down into Radlett and the Station.
Narrow paths and dozens of gates make it unsuitable for wheels. Not muddy, but it has been dry recently.
A good direct walk, probably more scenic in summer.
