Description

This route was created to avoid the unscreened path beside the busy road between Falmer and Woodingdean on PyeWoo 1 and 2 but the northern half is just the same as PyeWoo 2. There is 2.2km or 1.4km less road in total than PyeWoo 1 or 2. On the flipside it is a couple of miles longer with more up and down and a long flight of paved steps up/down a steep hillside. Otherwise it has similar gradients to PyeWoo 1 but PyeWoo 2 is (relatively) gentle.

It starts with the climb up through Pyecombe Golf Course and then mostly along ridge tops, bar a dip down to Lower Standean hamlet. It comes down again to pretty Stanmer Village along paths parallel to the lane then up to another ridge with views of Stanmer House and Stanmer Park (most of this valley is an extensive country park). This ridge separates the Stanmer valley and the University of Sussex campus' valley. The route separates from PyeWoo 1 and 2 and runs around the edge of Stanmer Park instead of down into the campus. Next under the A27, past Falmer Station and through the University of Brighton campus. From here to Bevendean uses field edge paths and tracks up to the top of Falmer Hill then a slower descent down an old track called Jugg's Road. Local authority signs recommend this part as a country walk. The roads in Bevendean only have local traffic but then it's the long steep steps up to Warren Road and the racecourse. The Drove is another old track which is first just a footpath set back from the busy road but after 400m it goes behind the north western edge of Woodingdean and has views across steep sided valley the other side.

Attached map shows the good choice of mid-route places to eat, use toilets, etc in Stanmer and the nearest parts of Sussex campus. Also multiple buses or trains from Falmer Station.

(The other way north from Woodingdean is a permissive path from The Drove down to Bevendean Recreation Ground. It could make a shorter route than this but I tried it and it has a very steep part through woodland where the ground was churned and unsteady where used by horses, quite hairy in the relatively dry weather and potentially treacherous. None of the Strava app runners ever use this path which is rarely a good sign.)

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

09 Mar 2025 Winter

I tested the southern part of this route from Woodingdean to Falmer after walking PyeWoo 1 into Woodingdean along the B2123 /Falmer Road. The traffic on PyeWoo 1 there was unpleasant and over too long a stretch to easily overlook. This was much more enjoyable and I'd happily walk it again but not PyeWoo 1 or the tidier version PyeWoo 2.

The Drove had some lovely views and was very busy with families, single walkers and all sorts in between. The only new section with much traffic would be it's final 400m beside busy Warren Road. Bevendean has no through roads and had little traffic. Leaving Bevendean, heading north, you can alternatively turn off the track through the nature reserve as the path uphill comes out at a gate near the pond at the top. The paths up and down from Falmer Hill also had some great views.

The original section is lovely too. I tested that from Falmer Station to Pyecombe the following day and again the views were great, perhaps more so to some people's taste as you can rarely see the residential areas of Brighton but for me the walk would be less interesting if didn't reflect that aspect of the area. Stanmer Tearoom looked nice and was busy considering it was a Monday in early March. Sadly the ice cream machine was still in winter hibernation.

I had to double back to check out this way south/down into Bevendean from Woodingdean after the other path (to the Rec) that I tested didn't work out and I confess I just had a look from the bottom rather than walk all the way up just to turn around and walk all the way down. Likewise I didn't check the path coming east down into Stanmer Village as I tested PyeWoo 1's poorly drawn steep and muddy path but I did look at either end. (Still safer by far than the Bevendean Rec path). Both paths are clearly well used judging by Strava and aerial views.
