Description

A more precise version of PyeWoo One that irons out the problems, mainly caused by misleading OS maps. It also makes three subtle changes using well used paths through publicly accessible land.

Working from Pyecombe to Woodingdean:
First non essential change parallel to Ditchling Road gives better views (east to Firle Beacon then south west to the sea).
Second is parallel to the tarmac lane but through a field then a ribbon of woodland.
Third avoids the steep and potentially slippery climb just east of Stanmer Village, reduces the max gradient and has better views of Stanmer House and the village.

It keeps to the spirit of PyeWoo One and so still uses the bike-friendly bridleway beside the B2123 / Falmer Road. Which is safe and has great views but is not screened from fast traffic which may be busy.

There are multiple mid-route chances to rest, eat, and catch a bus or train, either in Stanmer Village, the Uni of Sussex campus or Falmer Village, see attached map. The tearoom in Stanmer and the pub in Falmer are both mentioned in the reviews of PyeWoo One and Stanmer has public loos. There are too many cafes on the uni campus to mention, the three pink pins show food shops each within a cluster of eating places. Overnight walkers could use the 24 hour pizza vending machine by the middle pin

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

08 Mar 2025 Winter

A very enjoyable walk mostly along high ridges of the South Downs with many beautiful views. Also a visit to the University of Sussex campus Lots of mid-route break and breakout options, see my route description. It is almost the same as PyeWoo 1 and shares all the best bits and the reviews of that route give more details.

But it only gets 4 stars due to 2.5km of noisy, unscreened traffic along the busy B2123 / Falmer Road. I was there on a sunny Sunday in March, so with luck that will be better on weekdays, off-season and in less pleasant weather.

There were gates and a few stiles. Unfortunately the one next to New Barn has barbed wire across the top bar, hopefully the farm gate will be open. Beyond the rest places there are a few benches at Falmer Pond and one up on the ridge near Ditchling Road. Going was pretty good after a few dry weeks but a wet winter bar the wooded path through Pyecombe Golf Course which was still very muddy, ditto around some of the gates etc although stones, sticks and dry patches got me across the latter. The steep muddy slope on PyeWoo 1 is avoided so the GPX line suggests max gradient of 12% instead of 21%. The path through woodland just west of Falmer Village avoids 1.6km / 1 mi of road walking but it was winding, rooty and bumpy in places so you could just stick with the lane which was quiet.

Lastly I was told the church in Pyecombe is worth visiting and you can get a coffee there. If you get the bus from there be sure where the stops are. The "Garage" stop is next to the BP and not where the word Garage appears on OS Explorer maps. I was also told that most bus drivers do not stop at the "Saddlery" stop for route 17 as it is dangerous although perhaps they meant the stop by the Pyecombe overpass.
