Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

05 Feb 2023We walked this route from Probus to Mevagissey in February 2023 on a sunny day. Probus at the start had bus links and shops. The route was very accessible with no styles but the route is three stars as it was majority on country roads. This wasn’t a problem given how quiet these were but in the spring or summer these may become a lot busier especially given the route goes past the Lost Gardens of Heligan. Grampound had a pub for food and drink and you also go past a Farm Shop right next to the Lost Gardens of Heligan. Mevagissey is a lovely harbour with public toilets and many shops and restaurants although many shops were closed at this time of year on a Sunday.

05 Feb 2023I walked this route from Probus to Mevagissey. This is a functional Slow Way. Probus is a great hub with a bus route, shops, public toilets and a pub. Grampound serves as a good place on the route to take a break or stock up on supplies with a similar offering to Probus. No other major settlements are passed until Mevagissey, which is a harbour town with a selection of pubs, eateries and cafes, though many were closed at this time of year.
The route was mainly on roads, although they were generally quiet. This may be a different story in summer, especially with the traffic that Heligan can attract in the warmer months. The bridleways out of Probus and footpaths past Heligan were more pleasant and varied than the high sided country lanes in the middle of the slow way. Interestingly no stiles were crossed on this route, although some gates and muddy ground would still cause issues for wheeling.
Looking at the OS map, there isn't a viable alternative that satisfies the 'direct' criteria for a Slow Way. There were also no access issues, so this one is good enough to join the network in my book.

05 Feb 2023Walked this route from Probus to Mevagissey on a glorious winters day in Feb 2023. Used the free parking in the centre of Probus but it is on the bus route from Truro to St Austell which is how we returned having made it to St Austell using a second Slow Ways. Plenty of options for stocking up on supplies on route with shops in Probus, Grampound, Heligan (great farm shop) and Mevagissey. The route is easy to navigate and reasonably easy going but is let down by the significant amount of road walking which certainly detracted from the enjoyment. Most of the roads did not have pavements but were very quite apart from just a couple of small sections. Though it is difficult to see what alternatives could practically be used to reduce the reliance on road without significantly increasing the distance. Highlights were sections passing Trewithen and Heligan gardens though the section by Heligan does contain a very steep if short hill which I imagine would have been a lung buster if travelling in the other direction. Overall a route favouring practicality over pleasure.
