17 Jun 2023Does what it says on the tin: an improved route that avoids the busy roads of the original.
Whilst the first version was direct, it was essentially one long road, with not much excitement. Whilst this route is still mostly roads, they are infinitely quieter and more residential, and a pleasure to walk away from the din of traffic.
By far though, the best sections are around Thatto Heath. Leaving the roads finally, we first head through a park, before moving into some nice woodland. Eventually it opens up into a great meadow, full of wildflowers, overlooking St Helens itself. A downhill wander, and at the bottom we hit main road again, before joining the canal briefly on our final approach to the station.
A good route and, by my reckoning, accessible to all, and, more importantly, mostly away from busy, noisy roads!.

23 Nov 2022The first half of this route, starting from Prescot, used suburban housing streets as far as possible, to avoid the main road slog of PreSth One, although after the small shopping street of Prescot, there was about mile of main road. The background traffic noise only disappeared when I reached The Meads playing fields. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a dependable route through here and still had to stay on the suburban roads.
On reaching Thatto Heath there was a pleasant park alongside the railway, which had a couple of benches. Thatto Heath nature reserve had cycle barriers and a stile, and also a large puddle I had to skirt via the grass, and one short steep section through woods. The view from the top was good, and it was nice to be away from roads for a while. I spotted moorhens, coots, and a cormorant.
There are a multitude of possible paths on the heath. From the highest point, the obvious path down was slightly different from the plotted route, as shown on my map picture, but either would work.
The route along the A570 was made easier by a cycle track set back from the road, including a bridge with stairs and slope access. The final section of the route was alongside the disused St Helens Canal, which included an easy level crossing over the disused railway which had blocked the canal!.
