Description
I looked at this route to see if I could find a wheel user friendly route from Preston to Backburn, based on Prebla2. Spoiler alert I failed, but I did manage to find a wheel friendly route as far as Houghton

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

06 Dec 2022From Preston station rather that leaving via the main exit I left by an exit near platform 7, both work, but the one near the bike hub is the best.
Follow the footpaths past the car parks towards a bridge and a striking building on East cliff. There is a footpath below the bridge but it has been closed (gate) on occasions if it is open pass through as it leads you straight to the bridge over the Ribble. If it’s closed take the stairs to your left as shown on the GPX track. If you would prefer to avoid steps then head to ///plug.small.badge and then follow East Cliff Rd until you arrive at Avenham park. Avenham park has a cafe and free toilets should you feel the need.
The section of the walk to Bamber Bridge is very enjoyable, it’s a good surface, you have to cross a minor road and there is a narrow gap 62 cm but it should present any issues (see picture).
Bamber Bridge has shops, cafes, and toilets (behind Morrisons which you pass). The route passes through a pleasant park, past a sports centre and then to Brindle Rd. The route upto Gregson Lane follows minor roads and does offer some pleasant views on route.
From ///poker.radio.partly to ///cornering.occupations.pokes there isn’t a footpath but the road was very quiet when I walked it.
Footpaths return and you soon pass the Boars Head Pub which was serving food when I passed by. There are 2 bus stops outside of the pub that will take you to either Blackburn or Preston if the 7.3 miles you’ve bagged is enough or if you need a wheel friendly route.
If you carry on from here wheels will be a challenge.
After you pass ///lined.appraised.marinated you encounter a narrow foot bridge, stiles, muddy tracks, uneven steps, and animal in fields.
The walk is pleasant and easy to follow apart from the change of path near ///orange.spider.dishes. You emerge onto a road and turn left, passing houses on the left. You turn right before you reach the garage buildings on your right.
This stretch leads you to Alfred Wainwright memorial and view point, and the views (weather permitting) are definitely worth the trouble.
The route through Billinge wood is tricky to follow and you may want to head to Billinge End road when you get to ///given.dark.warm (the map suggests that there are mountain bike trails in the wood, although I didn’t encounter any bikes).
After you exit the wood you follow Under Billinge lane, this is a very quiet track without a footpath (apart from the section just before you reach Lawley road).
The rest of the route follows suburban roads with footpaths.
