04 Nov 2023Walked in November, requires sturdy waterproof footwear, some stretches of road without separate pavement.

05 Feb 2023I did one very long way from Hatfield to Newgate Street to Potters Bar, as Newgate Street is hard to get to.
The first stretch as mentioned is down a very busy road with no shoulder, which isn't terribly pleasant. Then it goes a mix of woodland, farms, and very very posh houses, briefly running again past a busy road (but this time with pavement). More hills than one would normally expect in Herts so I was pretty tired by the end. Ends in Morven Park, which is a far nicer open space than I would expect that close to Potters Bar.

15 Jul 2022I walked from Newgate Street to Potters Bar.
Newgate Streets is small and is difficult to get to/from by public transport, walk through it, have lunch at CC's or the Pub.
The road leading out of the village has sporadic verges but there is a path parallel to the road in the woods on the East side for part of the way. Home Wood is beautiful, there is an Activity Centre in the woods, strange noises! Exiting the woods there is a steep uphill suburban road and a private road with no pavements (?) to the Ridgeway. Then more lovely woods down to Northaw Brook (dry). From here (TL 29419 02811) the route joins Potche and Potwal slow ways up Hemps Hill
through a wooded path towards pretty Northaw Village. The approach to Northaw is along wide verges. Leaving Northaw is down Judges Hill, a busy road with a narrow pavement but it is a short section before getting back into the woods along a narrow rooty path to open fields with cattle. In Potters Bar the route follows the Hertfordshire Way NW before veering off SW to the town center (I prefer the Potwal route here, shorter, nicer). The Town has shops, cafes, pubs etc.
A varied and lovely walk, uneven paths and gates make it unsuitable for wheels.

08 May 2022I walked this from Potters Bar to Newgate Street. It is mostly a delightful route, except for the half a mile along Carbone Hill to the finish at Newgate Street. This is along a road without a pavement, and fairly busy. Without this segment, this route would be 5 stars. Although I walked it on a slightly drizzly morning, there was only a moderate amount of muddy sections. I have no doubt it would be significantly worse after prolonged rain.
Out of Potters Bar it climbs up a hill along a road in an urban setting, but after about a kilometre the rest of the route is through fields and woods, except for a section along Judge's Hill and through Northaw, which is on a pavement along a not so busy road. From there it climbs up against onto the aptly named Ridgeway which offers some great views. After a steep descent the route briefly goes through the delightful "Home Wood" before an annoying section along the fairly busy Carbone Hill into Newgate Street.
It follows the Hertfordshire Way and Hertfordshire Chain Walk routes for a significant amount of the route, which is nice as it's maintained and well sign posted.
