Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

A lot of urban walking along busy roads. The pedestrian footpath we would have followed was closed while they improve it, meaning we had to walk along some very busy high speed roads. The parts of the walk away from town were very nice though.

This is quite an urban walk and follows busy roads for most of its route. Some of the coastal paths east of Portsmouth around Langstone Harbour were temporarily closed meaning we had to follow roads more than we should otherwise have needed to. The A27 isn't the nicest. You rejoin the Solent Way as it skirts the A3M. After that its away from main road and into Havant. Once in Havant the route is direct and doesn't offer much opportunity for refreshment which a slightly less direct route might.
Not a great recreational walk, but functional.

Quite a bit of walking through industrial areas on the way out of Portsmouth. As we got the waters edge there was a temporary footpath closure and the diversion had us walking next to a busy road as opposed to along the coast. There was a designated footpath, but nervous dogs or young children may find this current diversion a little tricky. Once on the coastal path, was lovely to see the birds and wildlife that are being encouraged in the area.

Mainly footpath walk from Portsmouth Station through the town to Milton Common, there are some busy roads and a footbridge over the railway, which may hamper some walkers. Milton Common and the footpath along the harbour up the Eastern Road is mainly gravel and easy for pushchairs / wheelchairs. The northern part of the walk here has been recently opened following sea defence repairs and is smoother than previously. There is a shared bike / footpath through the top end of Farlington Marshes (potential to detour along the foreshore if preferred for bird watching) to Harts Farm on the outskirts of Havant. This is a mainly industrial area, with no shops or cafes enroute, so don't forget to stock up beforehand.Once across the footbridge for the A27, there is a retail park (Tesco / M&S) along with a few cafes and pubs in Havant. This route is fairly safe, with only a few major roads, all with pedestrian crossing access and really easy to navigate on the whole journey.
