Description
I am sharing this route now that the coast path between Severn Beach and Aust is fully open again and no detours are necessary. It routes round Portishead Marina and then uses the Coast Path most of the way but avoids the Avonmouth section of that walk which is blighted by big, busy trafficky roads. Instead it takes a far greener cycle-path-based route from the Avon Bridge to the coast

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

25 Apr 2026I give this Slow Way five stars because it offers such a wonderful portrait of the coastal zone of the mighty River Severn, even though some of it is noisy and industrial and you may even encounter a discarded mattress or burned-out motorbike along the way. If you are not a fan of the edgelands, you might enjoy it a little less, but I think it is great. It is surprisingly green. It uses a lot of waterside and wetland paths, crosses the Avon motorway bridge on a noisy but exhilarating footway, follows off-road cycle paths snaking around the docks and their associated industrial areas, and then the final section along the estuarine coast from just south of Severn Beach on up towards Aust is undisputed five star walking. Fuller review and photos to come.
