Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

First part of the route from Market Weighton to Londesborough is nice, if a little over grown in places (but partly that’s just the time of year). Walk mainly along the edge of fields full of crops and the odd pasture with cows and calf’s. A164 is busy and fast, so take care crossing. Second half of the route is less than ideal as it is all on roads…albeit minor roads, they are narrow with limited grass verges in places and cars travel quickly. We had an OS map with us and looked to plot and alternative route, but sadly there is a lack of public footpaths making the connection between Londesborough and Pocklington, so Burnby Lane is the only option.

A pleasant walk along country tracks and roads. We started in Market Weighton, worth a walk round this village for a café stop before starting. The first part of the walk 2 miles to Londesborough was across a well-defined track alongside fields (muddy underfoot after rain). We crossed the A614 which was not to busy at 10.30am and then we continued along a track past farmhouse buildings, over fields signposted to Londesborough. You come to a road and walk up the road for about 75m before branching right continuing across fields on another well defined track, going slightly up hill. You then go through a gate into a wood continuing into Londesborough. This took around 1hr. From here you follow the road to a crossroads, go across and head to Burnby. Country road not to busy but watch out for the cyclists!. Along stop at the viewing point for views across to York. There is a board which points out the various landmarks.
There is a grass verge that can be walked on. The road takes you into Burnby where there is a nice church which is worth a look. From here you follow the road 3miles into Pocklington, passing the Burnby cycle hub which has maps, books, tools to mend your bike and is an information centre for residents and visitors. This section of the road is busier as you approach the recycling centre. As you start to enter Pocklington there is a footpath to walk on. Pocklington is a market town with plenty of shops and eating places.

In summary an easy walk through fields and gates , moving to road walking after Londesborough.

Walked this route in the direction from Market Weighton to Pocklington.
The walk covers public footpaths and roads and takes in part of the Yorkshire Wolds Way. The walk has some fantastic views.
The walk only has a couple of small inclines and declines. There was one step of 6 inches on the footpath which needs considering if have a wheelchair or a pram.
The walk from Market Weighton takes you along the regular footpath through the town and then turn right as you leave the town on the public footpath up to Londesborough. This walk does you through fields containing livestock. Dogs will have to be on leads. There are a number of kissing gates but these are all wide (over 3 feet) but again need considering for wheelchairs or prams. The public footpath does go across the busy main road so you need to be careful crossing this. There is no shop or pub in Londesborough. The walk then heads into the village of Burnby. There are some spectacular views on this stretch. The walk from Burnby to Pocklington is on the road which is significantly busier than the other road elements of the walk but there is a grass verge. As you near Pocklington there is again a footpath. There are free public toilets in the towns of both Market Weighton and Pocklington. There are no shops or toilets en route.

Although I haven’t walked the full route from Pocklington to Market Weighton the section from Partridge Hall Farm in a SE direction to Londesborough then to Market Weighton is a pleasant, well marked route on good paths across farmland and through part of the Londesborough Estate with a short section of road walking. Londesborough has an interesting church but no pubs or cafes. Take care when crossing the A164.
