Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Some green spaces being developed. Route through residential street's. The steep downhill/ uphill will not be accessible for all.

Walked Peckham to Lewisham.
I enjoyed this route, it’s a straightforward walk across SE London, with a pleasant park at Hilly Fields, where I stopped for a cup of tea at an excellent hill top cafe.

The very end of the route at Lewisham could be more accurately drawn, I had to double back to get to a safe crossing point on the main road. This would be my only minor irritation with the route, but I don’t think it warrants making a new option.

I really enjoyed this walk but there is a potential issue with it. The path up the side of Nunhead Cemetery is very steep and rough (it's steep in both directions as it goes up and over the side of a reservoir), and there isn't any lighting. A good alternative during daylight hours would be to cut through the cemetery. After dark, I would suggest continuing along Linden Grove, turning right onto Ivydale Road and then right again onto Limesford Road to rejoin the route.
Other than this, it is a very enjoyable walk through back streets and green spaces. There are views from Hilly Fields. The only bits I didn't enjoy much were the initial walk down busy Rye Lane and arriving at Lewisham station with very busy major roads.

Shedges

I ran this on a grey Sunday afternoon as part of a longer route involving 3 other Slow Ways (Peclew one, Dulpec one and Dulcat one). I ran it from Lewisham to Peckham. The start of the route crosses a busy main road (via a pedestrian crossing) but then is largely on quiet residential streets. It passes through Hilly Fields which rewards you for the climb with great views, a nice cafe and a children's playground (there are toilets at the cafe). The route goes up a narrow footpath next to Nunhead Cemetery; this path is gravelly and so slightly uneven underfoot and it is unlit, which may pose accessibility or safety concerns. The cemetery itself would make an interesting detour during opening hours. The route then takes you up Rye Lane to the station.
