Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

  1. Complete the survey training.

I walked this route from Peckham to Canada Water

It’s a bit of a shock coming out of Peckham Rye station on to Peckham High Street. The bustle and noise doesn’t seem like a typical Slow Ways route but you soon get onto quieter pastures and the Green Link way.

This is an ex-Canal made into walkway.

You then cross an always busy Old Kent Road. Then there’s another fairly busy stretch until you hit the welcome oasis of Southwark Park where things quieten down a bit.

(Picture is of a traditional horse drawn hearse on Peckham High Street).

Out of Peckham Rye station, it’s straight into a passage with a colourful fruit & veg market. You turn left into busy Peckham High Street and follow it to the architectural delight that is Peckham library.
From here, you follow Surrey Canal walk, formerly a, er, canal, before turning right and into the wonderfully named Bird-in-Bush Road. There are a couple of interesting buildings standing out among the rows of neat little terraced houses.
Cross the Old Kent Road, you turn right towards Surrey Quays through a small retail park. The next section of the walk isn’t very pleasant in terms of things to see, but it’s easy to navigate and the pavements are comfortably wide.
Then comes a detour through a pleasant housing estate, bringing you into the vast green space of Southwark Park and two lines of towering plane trees. There’s a cafe, gallery and Rose Garden in the park, but I carried on to Surrey Quays.
You pass down another quiet, resident street, where a squirrel on a garden gate challenged me to a stare-down. Then past the magnificently grand Surrey Dock offices where a Blue Plaque marks the first fire of The Blitz.
At Canada Water, the Library’s friendly café served rather good coffee, and a great toastie.
A walk full of contrast, from busy high street to quiet back streets, and a tree-filled park to the swans swimming at Surrey Quays.

Not as nice as the other Canada Water-Peckham walk, walking mainly along busy roads.
