Is Hyde Park really world famous? Otherwise this is all true. It's green, it's gorgeous, it's fun, it's ostentatious. PadOxf 3 leans into the "enjoyable and beautiful", "off road" and "easy to navigate" criteria for Slow Ways. There's a Central London buzz but away from the heaviest traffic and the claustrophobic crowding of Oxford Street. Luckily the shoppers around Bond Street are fewer and less coagulant because the shopping here, while desirable, is also wildly unaffordable. There's heaps to see all the way along and plenty of places to buy food, have a picnic or do some window menu-shopping.
* Navigation from Paddington to Hyde Park is almost a straight run but the tiny detour should not be missed.
* In Hyde Park this path choice from Victoria Gate to Upper Brook Street Gate keeps so far from roads you can't see and can barely hear them. The shortest option only saves 200m. There are distinct regions of landscaping and views and yet it's easy to follow on the ground and the paths show clearly on both OS and OSM maps. The "Reformers Tree" junction would, maybe, be ambiguous but the long-gone tree is now replaced by a stone memorial (somewhat like a sundial) that also functions as an enormous, ground level fingerpost. There is even an actual fingerpost, and the junction is highlighted on the park's own maps. Definitely the best mid-park option. There are public toilets nearby at "The Lookout".
* Through Mayfair is another straight run along Brook Street with plenty to look at as well as passing through Grosvenor Square.
* At New Bond Street there is a small dogleg and then down a passage to Medici Courtyard, a tiny new public square. Keep going and you soon emerge onto pedestrianised Hanover Square (another small public park) which is just a hop and a skip from Oxford Circus. That is always absolutely rammed so if you are just passing through consider making a detour to avoid the crowds.
I hope you enjoy this route as much as I did

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

23 Feb 2025Loved it! A smorgasbord of fancy architecture to ogle - the art deco GWR building at Paddington, Regency terraced townhouses, Hyde Park Gardens Mews (dreamy!), the "London Chancery" AKA ex-American Embassy (is that gold plating?), Claridges and the top-hatted doormen, etc, etc.
And a gorgeous way through Hyde Park too, the simplest way is the outer loop beside the bridleway but that's very samey. Grosvenor Square is a big enough park to feel repiste from the traffic. Hanover Square too and Medici Courtyard is completely enclosed by new buildings with fancy eateries; new to me and worth a look.
This was part of a longer walk from Paddington to Charing Cross on a sunny Saturday in very early spring. There were a lot of people about and, inevitably traffic outside of the parks. And yet it never felt too much. Although as I was creating the route whilst testing it on the fly I would probably have fixed that if needed. I was thoroughly pleased with it. Photos are attached to the route description not here, on reflection a mistake.
If the Mayor of London's plan to pedestrianise Oxford Street goes ahead things might change. But would the denizens of exclusive Mayfair be willing to accept more traffic? It could even decrease.
