Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

19 Jul 2025Great route. Some road sections, but mostly quiet. Then a lovely route over the hills to the end. Take the opportunity to visit Mays Shop; a feature of the Pennine Way. It's just 150 m to the East of the point where Fold Lane is nearing Edge Lane, when travelling from Blackshaw Head.

19 Jul 2025From Blackshaw Head, the little cut-through path was easy to use, although fairly steep. The road here is regularly used by cars, but they will be travelling slowly. The New Delight Inn is currently open five evenings a week, plus weekend lunchtimes.
The lanes soon after Jack Bridge became traffic-free, as the tarmac ran out and we found ourselves following the Pennine Bridleway.
Reaching the moorland section was particularly nice, with views to Reaps Cross and Standing Stone Hill either side. We descended to pass near to Gorple Lower Reservoir and crossed a steep-sided little river valley, briefly joining the Pennine Way, where a stone path brought us back out to cross a field to the Pack Horse Inn, which is, once again closed I’m afraid.
Otherwise, a perfect little route with lovely scenery.

08 Jun 2024This is an excellent route, predominantly following the pennine bridleway.
Note that the New Delight Inn and Jack Bridge makes a better end point at the Blackshaw Head end of this route, particularly if your walk continues to Heptonstall or Hebden Bridge.
