Description
I've tweaked a section of the route between Hertford North station and Bramfield Park Wood so as to avoid the Bramfield Road / Tattle Hill section which was flagged. I've not included the short and obvious detour to Bramfield (The Grandison pub). I've done this by downloading the gpx file and amending it, so most of the route is identical including the start and finishing points

13 Sep 2025I walked this from Hertford to Oaklands on a reasonably warm and sunny morning.
Although there had been showers in the previews few days (and later in the day), none of the paths were muddy.
From the station (photo #1), you first walk into town, and then out again to get to Hertford North station. It's a combination of residential streets, but also a park and some greenery (photo #2). After going across the railway (photo #3), the trail follows a high path (photo #4, with a fair steep drop to the south) which gradually descents to meet the A414, which you luckily only follow for a very short distance.
The path into Chesher's Plantation is steep (photo #5), but the paths are good going, and the trees were lovely (photo #6). You cross Welwyn Road with a bridleway crossing. And although the path isn't wide, it's wide enough to make it safe. The route then becomes undulating, with wide open views (photo #7, #8, #9, #11), and occasional sections of wood (photo #10). Burnham Green starts with being full of big houses with big fences (photo #12). You leave the hamlet with a footpath, before crossing the road and through Harmergreen Wood (photo #13). Going around the outskirts of a residential development gets you to the finish.

08 Mar 2025I walked from Oaklands to Hertfordon a very sunny (22C) early March day.
From Oaklands's shops and North Star Pub across the road and up Turpins Ride which changes from a road to a track to a path to a windy path between houses and woodland. Then farm parstues with kissing gates, a short quiet road and into Burnham Green; Pub, café, bus stop and trigpoint. Then a series of narrow paths and driveways past and around expensive houses. You think its a dead end then there's a path squeezed between the grounds. There are some narrow and rooty paths here, some still muddy despite the recent dry spell. Suddenly, open fields past Queens Hoo House and a long track to Bacon's Farm, Wide and narrow paths between fields and through woods. A short walk along a 'Highway Verge Path' to wandering paths through fields and woods. Down into Hertford outskirts, steep. A cycle path followed by an undulating cut through to Hertford North Station then to the main High Streets. It was Saturday and there ws a market with tempting stalls almost all the way to Hertford East Station.
Frankly this route is not mapped very well but it is very hard to get lost. The paths are clear, well signposted and well used, follow the path on the ground, don't worry if the GPS says you're not exactly on the route, you are.
Really lovely walk, narrow paths winding between trees and fences to wide expansive fields, woods and villages. So much bird song, my first skylarks and brimstone of 2025.

12 Jul 2024This is an enjoyable walk through some lovely countryside. There were no major concerns for us walking it, but some sections (e.g. stairs in Hertford, uneven slopes in the countryside) may present challenges for those will more restricted mobility.
We walked this starting from Hertford. The walk through the town is pleasant, generally along wide pavements and via pedestrianised streets.
Leaving Hertford, there was a bit of confusion with between the gpx and our navigation app, which seemed to be directing us to walk along the verge of a relatively busy road (B1000) but there was a (safer) path removed from the road that could be followed instead.
After crossing the B1000, we enjoyed some very pleasant walking, along well defined tracks but through some really beautiful countryside - a variety of bridal paths, tracks through fields and through woods.
Burnham Green village (the only place mid route with shops/pubs) presented a great opportunity for us to have a short rest, despite being relatively close to the end of the walk.
The final stage of the walk to Oaklands through Harmergreen Wood was a bit less clear - we were unsure whether we were on the correct path (or even a well-defined path) at several times, but the scenery was so pleasant, this wasn't a major concern.
