Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

I walked the route from Thirsk. I agree with the previous reviewers that this is a pleasant route abs should be included. The challenges identified and resolved in the 2 previous reviews (thank you) remain, though hedges had recently been cut and this really helped. One suggestion is that the diversion at South Kilvington takes the walker along main roads and has been here for the last 2 years. There is a path from Thirsk that joins the route heading north out of Thirsk (going behind the Church) and it is an alternative which avoids roads. Also, look out for the Buddha statue hidden in a hedge in a field just short of Thornton Stud (picture attached).

This is a pleasant route mainly through pasture and cultivated fields. I began in Thirsk and the first section was a nice walk beside the Cod Beck as far as South Kilvington. It was here I had my first diversion as the path was closed to repair footbridges. The alternative route wasn't too bad. Then it was almost all fields for the rest of the route. The season meant that vegetation was overgrown in places and it was still muddy underfoot from yesterday's rain. The second diversion of the day was at Thornton le Street Stud. I find the official legal notification of a path diversion very difficult to follow. The new path in the end was quite obvious. There were plenty of stiles, some in better repair than others. The one mentioned in the previous review was still somewhat overgrown but I hacked back the undergrowth and cleared it enough fir me to use it. What a useful thing walking poles are. After this there was a short section of corn field which was fun but the a section along the railway line which was gruelling as There was no clear path as the farmer had ploughed.right to the edge leaving you a choice of wading through long wet grass and nettles or collecting mud on your boots from his field. All in all though a good route which I would recommend.

A good route through pleasant countryside. A stile in the field to the north of Brockholme farm was blocked , it is totally overgrown and "buried" in the hedgrow.. It can be avoided by going down Brockholme lane onto the road and on to the farm lane at Martin's Folly Cottages and following until back on the way south of Thornborough farm. I will try to clear the blockage when I next do this route.
Otherwise an enjoyable walk.

At that stile I hacked away at the undergrowth with my walking pole and got through OK. Just needs a few more people to use it I suppose
