Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Barnetby le Wold was a lovely town to walk through. There were public toilets that were free to use which were clean - very convenient.
We went along the Viking Way which went through different farm lands with fields of wheat, peas, potatoes, and more! In the fields there were occasionally paths to follow that were walkable but a lot of the times

Between Barnetby and Bigby there were small bridges that were overgrown shrubs and were a bit tricky to walk on to / through the bushes.

There were many black slugs on the route so had to be mindful of my steps! Came across an injured squirrel which I took care of overnight and released the next day as vets do not treat grey squirrels.

From Bigby going into Somberby before going on to Low Farm Lane the route tells you to go through hole in the bushes but that area has overgrown with planted trees and you can get on to the lane by just walking all the to the end of the field.

At times we had to make our own path through a field which felt a bit destructive but didn’t have much choice.

Walking stick used to help walk due to the overgrown Viking Way paths. Overgrown paths were difficult to walk on and can imagine it gets worse with further growth as these “paths” do not seem to be managed. Sometimes had to walk along the edge or into the field of crops.

Having walked this recently I would now continue on Low Farm Road into the pretty village of Somerby, joining the Viking Way there. Remember some of these routes were written in lockdown in places never visited!

As I strolled through Barnetby le Wold, I couldn't help but admire the beautiful community planting that earned the village the title of best community planting in 2023. The vibrant colors and well-tended gardens made the walk a delightful experience.

Walking through the farm fields, I found myself trying to guess the various types of produce being grown. It was a fun and interactive way to engage with the surroundings.

Moving on to the area between Barnetby le Wold and Bigby, I came across an overgrown bridge that seemed quite easy to miss. It added an element of intrigue to the journey.

Upon reaching Low Farm Lane, I encountered some difficulty finding an opening to get onto the road. It appeared that new trees had been planted, potentially hindering accessibility in the coming years. Despite this, I was able to continue along the route to eventually find an opening onto the road.

At times, I found myself walking on the edge or through fields of crops, adding a touch of adventure to the walk.

at low farm lane, we was unable to to find an opening to get onto the road as it seemed like new trees had been planted and may not been accessible in a few years. You can carry on passed the route to find an opening onto the road.
sometimes we had to walk on the edge or into field of crops.
