Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

04 Mar 2023I walked this route, Northiam to Tenterden, today. It does neatly encapsulate the idea of the Slow Ways. It was direct and pretty easy, and there are a couple of refreshment points on or near the route.
Getting out of Northiam on the A28 is not particularly glamourous as the road can be a bit fast, but there is sufficient verge to feel safe. Soon enough you're across the River Rother and walking the levels. The skies are big and the terrain is flat. It's a meditative landscape where not a lot happens. You cross a heritage railway line (second time on this walk) but generally you just meander as the river and the embankments take you. It's got to be almost impossible to get lost on this section of the walk. There is precious little cover though so I can imagine driving rain or a hot sun being quite trying out there. I should probably mention that I saw an animal being skinned and butchered in a farm along the way so y'know, that was a bit unusual.
When you come across the Chapel Down vineyard, about 3/5 of the way along the route, you have a place to rest for a bit if you need it. They have a bar, of course, and a restaurant if you have the funds. Smallhythe Place is just past the vineyard, off the route, down the hill a couple of hundred metres. They have a cafe with seasonal opening hours but it is very cheap and simple.
On the route after the vineyard you slowly undulate upwards towards Tenterden. Fields with electric fence boundaries and huge muddy puddles can sometimes be a problem here but today it was simple enough to get-by. If you forage then you'll love the next stretch in spring as there are endless supplies of wild garlic to gather up til Tilder Gill. Once you've climbed out of the woods you are a stone's-throw from Tenterden and it was actually a bit of a shock to arrive in the bustle of the town on a Saturday after such a peaceful walk. Thoroughly enjoyable.
