Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

A lovely - and easy route for the most part, as it follows the Tarka Trail which is totally tarmacked between Barnstaple and Bideford. It is a shared route and so there are cyclists also using the route on the Tarka Trail. The section between Bideford was pleasant but at the time I walked it - after a few days of heavy rain some of the paths which are not on tarmac were a little difficult Hence only 4stars. At Northam in particular there is a steep section on an enclosed path at Clevelands Park, which because of the rains was funnelling the water into a fast flowing "stream". For this reason I would suggest after heavy rains or if wheeling. Best to chose the tarmac option shown in NorBid2 which uses the pavement through Clevelands Park on this section. I will be suggesting a Norbar2 for exactly this purpose. Otherwise a great route with a selection of cafes, pubs and viewing seats along the route.

I walked this route from Barnstaple to Northam. The first portion is on the Tarka trail, which is easy from a surface and navigation perspective but loses a star due to volume of bike traffic, making this very unrelaxing a route. I preferred the section after this, heading up to Northam on footpaths and small roads. The instow to appledore ferry would have been a lovely way to cut off some of this route, but only runs a couple of hours either side of high tide.

Great walk. Northam to Bideford is along some roads, and footpaths, but just after Bideford the route follows the Tarka Trail and coast path to Barnstaple.
The first part of the walk is more challenging in that the ground can be rough and you have to take care to follow the right path to stay on the route, but once you hit the Tarka Trail you can't go wrong.
There is plenty to look at, and plenty of opportunities to stop for a break at a pub, cafe or picnic site. If the route is too long, you can get off the path easily to get to the bus route between the towns, and during the day buses run every 15 mins.
