Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Interesting walk following the Tyne from the Quayside (where there's a market on Sundays) to St Peter's Basin (check out the sunken boat at the east end of the basin at low tide). The next stage has some potholes that fill up with water - some of them never dry up - but there are good views of the river and you can see the ribs of another sunken boat (low tide) along by the old leadworks area. There are a couple of steep slopes or steps to get up to the higher level to avoid the industrial estate. This section is less interesting (unless you like wild flowers as I do) as you lose the view of the river. Fairly good paths the rest of the way but you'll have to cross a couple of roads and continue on the other side. The path eventually runs past Segedunum, the Roman fort at Wallsend. A great walk on a sunny day. It took me a couple of hours as I like to stroll and stop and stare. Pedestrians - watch out for cyclists whizzing past (doesn't anyone have a bell these days?) Cyclists - give a shout to let us know you're coming.

A good route along the Tyne, virtually all off-road.

I walked this route from Wallsend to Newcastle.

This is an easy walk along the first (or last) stage of the Hadrians Wall national Trail. The surface is tarmac almost all the way.

For the first part of the walk you follow a cycleway/ex waggon way through an industrial/post industrial landscape. There are few views on this section though there are trees and undergrowth on both sides which obscure the factories and make for a pleasant walk.

You then head down to the river bank and walk into Newcastle. Once at St Peters Basin the route starts going along streets to Ouseburn. There are pubs and cafes aplenty at the Newcastle end of this walk.

Not the most beautiful route, but interesting, easily walkable, mostly flat, & some good views of the Tyne. Some parts run through warehouse areas, or don't have good lighting - it isn't necessarily one I'd walk alone or at night. Some stairs.
