Description

Cross the canal on Parkway Bridge, then turn right on the footpath down to the towpath. Turn left along the canal, and follow it under the road bridge. Keep right to stay alongside the canal, and follow it past one set of locks. Take the wooden footbridge across the canal, then continue along the right side of the canal until the path ends at a road bridge. Cross the road and the bridge, and continue along the left of the canal. After the next lock, cross the bridge ahead, then turn left along the footpath. After 300 m, turn right, and continue until you reach a car park. Continue through the car park to Thatcham Lake, then turn left and follow the path around the lake. Go past the café/museum, and then after another 100 m turn left over the bridge and keep right. Cross the first field and go through the orchard, then turn right to follow the boundary of the next large field. At the end turn left to keep following the perimeter, then on the main road, turn right, cross the road, and follow the lawn and Meadow Close along to the church. Finally turn left along the Broadway into Thatcham

Surveys

We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.

Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

Nice route, but we tend to cut across the Lower Way Playing Fields.

The path to the south of Newbury Sewage Works and round past Thatcham Lakes can get extremely muddy. An alternative is after crossing the reed beds, continue north onto Prince Holt Road and follow Lower Way.

A pleasant route making better use of green space and footpaths at the Thatcham end than Newtha One.
Out of Newbury, the first section follows the Kennet and Avon towpath which has a good even surface and ramped bridges for accessibility. After crossing the Hambridge Road, the towpath becomes rougher with some uneven surfaces and exposed tree roots (Photo 1). On turning left through the reed beds the path is made narrower, in summer at least, by the towering vegetation (Photo 2). The route then follows gravel tracks to the lake at the Nature Discovery Centre (Photo 3). This makes for a pleasant stop with plenty of picnic benches and a café which is open every day in the summer holidays, otherwise usually closed on Mondays. Exiting the Nature Discovery Centre via the Community Orchard, another gravel track leads towards Lower Way where the route crosses the road into a small housing estate, finally leading to a footpath behind the church and into Thatcham town centre.

A flat route with a mixture of paved and natural paths. A good variation of country, wildlife and generally quiet. In good weather the paved area in Newbury can be busy with cyclists and runners.
The canal can be accessed from the start by the easily accessible route described, or via stairs by the library. This requires the crossing of a road bridge.
The towpath is paved and gravel chiiping to another road bridge crossing, but from there is unpaved until the Thatcham Nature Discovery Centre. This can be very muddy at times and would not be suitable for a pushchair etc.
The area through the orchard and field is also unpaved, though this changes on entering Thatcham. The road area here is quiet, though there is one relatively busy road to cross.
The photos are of the various turning points on the route.
