I started this route from Stafford. The start from the station is simple and it's not long before you join the Way for the Millennium, which takes you all the way to the edge of Newport, the destination. It runs along an old railway line and is paved so my boots remained clean, with the exception of a couple of cattle crossings (easier to face than a field of inquisitive cows). In the methodology of a Slow Way it's a definite 5 for directness and safety (in the road sense rather than the 24x7 as it's not lit). The actual walking lacks variety but what surrounds it does not. You walk past meadows, houses, gardens, reserves, villages and at one stage, a canal. The route is very popular with dog walkers, joggers and the occasional cyclist and has a very friendly air. The only thing I thought it might fail on was somewhere to stop but almost miraculously at halfway (10km from in Stafford and 9km from Newport) the old railway reaches a spot where a bridge has been demolished and you have to descend and cross the road at Gnosall Heath, where there is a pub! The only vaguely difficult road crossing is the A41 when you arrive in Newport. Very easy to follow. Designed for people to enjoy with multiple benches overlooking views and even a bench which spans the crossing from Staffordshire into Shropshire. Wildlife abounds! 5 Stars!.

This is a well used route along a disused railway track. Many local people use it for exercise and commuting on foot and by bike. It is generally flat, well surfaced with a couple of sections that can be very muddy after prolonged wet weather. There are numerous benches along the route. There is a brief section at the Stafford end that appears to go along a private road and says ‘No Cycling’ but this is universally ignored. Travelling from Stafford to Newport, after crossing the main road on the outskirts of the town, walk across the retail park in front of McDonalds and Greggs to find the way into the town.

Old railway line. Pretty much flat. Lots of walkers, runner, cyclists and the occational horse.
