Description
This route provides an alternative route to Newpon1, due to access and terrain limitations. It takes an open mountain top route instead of through the forestry network (terrain limitations). A second problem with Newpon1 is walking down Blaendare Road on the outskirts of Pontypool, where the signed footpath is totally blocked (after the college and short row of houses, but before the school grounds start). This alternative takes you all the way down Blaendare Road to join the cycle path at the bottom, leading all the way into Pontypool

Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.

Not an easy route to follow, as there is hardly any signage in between the tarmac sections at either end. Most of the paths are well trodden though and over the mountain top, it`s just a matter of taking a path as close as possible to the forestry land, while staying on the open moors. There are several alternative routes to Newpon1, either over the mountain or along the mountain side through the Forestry, but I think this route is a good compromise between shortest distance and best views, which are spectacular on a clear day - across the Hafodyrynys valley and beyond to the Brecon Beacons. It`s very rough underfoot in parts, especially going down from the mountain top to wind your way into Upper Race.
