30 Jul 2022I walked from Hertford to Newgate Street.
From the station past shops in the Highstreet towards the church. There is a subway under the A414 which exits by the church. A path alongside the grave yard takes you to a hedge corridor past a sports centre and diagonally over a busy road up some steps into the countryside. a narrow path with a narrow bridge takes you to steps over the rail line. The path continues alongside the rail way which is hidden in a cutting, this is part of the Hertfordshire Way. Some parts are steep and are clearly wet and muddy in the winter, but in dry weather it was uneven and rooty but pleasant. The route continues along a field edge past a farm along tracks. There is a busy road to walk along for a short distance but there is a verge, although narrow in places; I would not like to do this in poor visibility or the dark. Turning right there is a track through woodland and fields. There are some very quiet roads without pavements. Once past Ponsbourne Park you approach Newgate Street with 2 pubs and a good café for lunch.
A beautiful walk through varied countryside, lots to see. A mix of woods, open fields, and tracks.
Not for wheels, narrow, steep in parts, narrow bridges and steps. Muddy in Winter.

30 Oct 2021Generally a pleasant walk, on tarmac and rough tracks for around the first two thirds, and muddy but well maintained paths for the last third. Two deal breakers however:
1. Just north of Home Farm the track is not well maintained, and when I walked it there was a puddle the whole width of the track, which it was impossible to pass without getting my feet wet.
2. The route between Old Claypits Farm and The Wilderness is on a busy B-road, with cars going much faster than 30mph. This did not feel safe at all, and there was no alternative route here.
