Surveys
We are working to build-up a picture of what routes look like. To do that we are asking volunteers to survey routes so that we can communicate features, obstacles and challenges that may make a route desirable or not.
Slow Ways surveyors are asked to complete some basic online training, but they are not vetted. If you are dependent on the survey information being correct in order to complete a route, we recommend that you think critically about the information provided. You may also wish to wait until more than one survey has been completed.
Help people know more about this route by volunteering to submit a survey.

01 Apr 2024A very beautiful walk.
Upon leaving Ipswich the first stretch is largely tarmac main roads and alongside an loud A-road which is the slight downside of this walk however we did manage to march this quickly which lead us to some delightful landscapes.
A very good variation of places. Lots of open fields, lots of lovely animals, huge tall trees and a few old mill buildings.
As mentioned previously, a bridge closure that could cause a large diversion route for some.

31 Mar 2024Beautiful, open landscapes lead you through farm fields and greater parts of the trip alongside the river. Be mindful of clarification of routes, as well as the close bridge, that earlier reviewer Thom Brisco refers to.

29 Mar 2024Setting out from Ipswich, the long straight Old / Norwich Road quickly takes you out of the city along paved surfaces before the trail takes you off road to track the course of the River Gipping. Flanked by fields, ponds, and woodland, this winding river path is a gentle and pretty walk.
There are two areas where Slow Ways’ recommended route would benefit from some adjustment. I have attached two images clarifying the correct route of paths (marked in red), firstly where the trail enters Great Blakenham, and secondly to the south of Baylham House Rare Breeds Farm where the current (blue marked) route has you wondering whether you should be crossing some unnecessary bridges. Passing the farm there were lots of big, beautiful beasts to wave at on the north bank of the river. As you leave the farm, turning north, you should stay on the path running on the eastern side of the railway line.
As of March 2024, a bridge over Old River remains closed where Old River meets the River Gipping – this is located between Pipps Lock and Creeting Lock. Whilst the bridge is fenced off, local walkers assured us that it remained structurally sound and in regular use; we crossed without issue. Future walkers should approach this stretch of the route with caution, establishing whether the bridge has become impassable or whether construction works are taking place.
